Junk Build
ALL AGES
(younger children under 7 will need an adult actively assisting them)
Diesel is one of our brave Life Learners youth taking on the challenge to run a workshop on our special day for the youth to have a go! Ka pai tō mahi!
Diesel would love you to join him in a workshop doing one of his favourite things - Junk Building! He is inspired by 'Walle' and wants to create robots together out of lots of cool bits n bobs! If they want to at the end they can spray paint their creation!
Benefits of Junk Building!
The open-ended nature of junk materials, which can be anything from a robot to a rocket ship, encourages children to use their imagination and engage in creative, divergent thinking (finding multiple solutions to a problem). Critical thinking is exercised and expanded by problem- solving real-world challenges during construction, such as how to make two objects stick together or how to make a structure stable. This requires them to problem-solve, experiment through trial and error, hypothesize, and develop critical thinking skills. Other important benefits are :
Fine and Gross Motor Skills by manipulating materials and tools.
STEAM Learning (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics)
Language and Communication are developed as youth work, they often discuss their ideas, narrate their process, and use descriptive language to talk about textures, shapes, and functions.
Collaboration and Social Skills Group projects require children to work together, share materials, negotiate ideas, and help each other, which hones essential teamwork and social skills.
Self-Confidence and Resilience by successfully creating something unique from scratch provides a significant sense of accomplishment boosts self-esteem and independence.
